GENERAL INFORMATION

CAÑO NEGRO

Wildlife Refuge Caño Negro is a humid area considered to be Costa Rica’s richest in biodiversity. There is a large variety of resident and immigrant birds there as well as three species of monkeys, iguanas, sloths, caimans and turtles.

Some of the birds found in Cano Negro are so abundant that it is possible to see hundreds of them/ especially during the dry season. Some of the birds found there are the anhinga, the wood stork, the jabiru, the neotropical comorant, etc.

Congo monkeys can be observed along the sides of the river as well as spider monkeys, white faced monkeys, three toed sloths and reptiles such as caiman, basilisks and turtles.

ARENAL VOLCANO

The Arenal Volcano began its activity in July of 1968 and since then has had constant explosions of gases, water vapor, and piroclastic material occasionally accompanied by loud rumbling.

The ash is carried by the wind long distances, especially toward areas to the north east of the volcano. The largest, heaviest materials fall close to the crater. The constant lava flow emits temperatures above 1000 degrees centigrade, but loses heat as it runs down the sides of the volcano.

Currently there are many places to enjoy the beautiful scenery of this area and watch the numerous eruptions of this majestic volcano.

VENADO CAVES

These caves where formed during the Mioceno period approximately 15 or 20 millions years ago. During many years, the caves were submerged deep in the oceans. Due to the movement of the tectonic plates, the caves raised up to form part of the surface. The caves were discovered by the Guatuzo indians. They are mainly made up of chalky stone, stalactites, stalagmites and coral. There are interesting rock formations formed by the erosive action of a subterranean river that passes through the caves.

A tour through the caves will take approximately two hours. During this time, you can find fossils, bats, spiders and other insects.

ARENAL LAKE

The Arena Lake is the largest, most important in Costa Rica. It is an artificial lake, constructed in 1974 as a way to provide hydroelectric energy to the country. A large variety of resident and migratory birds can be found around the lake, as well as mammals such as monkeys and sluttish.

The Arenal Lake is an important tourist attraction in the area. Different aquatic sports are practiced there such as sport fishing, boat rides, etc. It has also become a perfect place to spend a day with the family.

HOT SPRINGS

The Northern Zone of our country has many differents places where one can enjoy hot springs. For example: La Fortuna, La Marina, Goatees, etc.

These hot springs are water that come from volcanic channels and are made up of minerals making them a good option to relax in a very special way.

The Northern Zone in general is an area of approximately 10,000 square kilometers and has become an area with much tourist potential. This zone is oriented towards the conservation of our natural resources and the development of projects of sustainable development. We invite you to come share our beauty during your next vacation.
